The next edition of The SBP Wind Orchestra is finally here. With almost 20 teams competing this year, Wind Orchestra is becoming one of the major new phenomenons throughout SBPs these days, perhaps as grand as PPM. This year, Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Ahmad Shah was the home team. This year, the format of the competition is slightly different from the one we (Class of 2004) were in 4 years back. With the increased number of teams participating this year, the organizers has introduced a new system, a two divisions competition, with the best 10-11 teams competing in division one (D1), with a chance of making into the top 5 and compete in the Grand Final and the remaining (largely comprising of new teams) are to compete in the 2nd Division with the champion of D2 will be promoted to D1. It’s the “soccer fever” with something similar to the English Premier League and the Division One with the grand final mimicking the UEFA Champions League. MCKK as among the top teams was placed in D1. It’s not a surprise though. However, based on frank opinions of those present at this year's competition, there is difference in quality between the top teams in D1 and the teams in D2. Maybe that is the rationale of compiling the good teams in one league and the new and inexperience team in the other.
MCKK Wind Orchestra Team performed on Wednesday (26/3/08) and according to Acap 08, they did performed better than last year but some of the other teams also performed beyond expectations, improving in almost all aspects, making them good contenders for the 5 limited places in the Grand Final. Enough with the chit-chat and its time to know how our boys performed this year. The preliminary has just concluded not long ago and here are the unofficial results: In the Premier League (D1) – 13 Teams8 teams awarded the Gold MedalSekolah Sri Putri (SSP), Tunku Kursiah College (TKC), Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SAS), Malay College Kuala Kangsar, Sek. Men. Sains Sultan Azlan Shah (SERATAS), Sekolah Dato Abdul Razak (SDAR), Sek. Men. Sains Sultan Abdul Halim (SEMSAH), Sekolah Tunku Abdul Rahman (STAR).5 teams awarded the Silver MedalSekolah Tun Fatimah (STF), Sek. Men. Sains Machang, Sek. Men Sains Dungun, SESMA, Sek. Men. Sains. Tunku Syed Sirajuddin.1 team awarded the Bronze MedalSek. Men. Sains Sultan Ahmad Shah (SEMSAS)In Division 2 (D2) – 6 Teams
SMS Kota Tinggi announced as the champion of D2
3 teams awarded the Gold Medal
Sek. Men. Sains Selangor (SMSS), Sek. Men. Sains Kota Tinggi (SAKTI), Sek. Men. Sains Sultan Muzaffar Shah(MOZAC).
3 teams awarded the Silver Medal
Sek. Men. Sains Tengku Jaafar (STJ), Sek. Men. Sains Syed Putra, Sek. Men. Sains Kuching.
The Best Improved Team Award goes to:
Sek. Men. Sains Sultan Abdul Halim (SEMSAH)
Sekolah Tunku Abdul Rahman (STAR) Just to fill your curiosity, there are slight differences in the marking standard and line up of judges between D1 and D1 thus this explains the present of the 3 gold medalists in D2. Nevertheless, it is good to remind ourselves again that these are new teams and they lack the competitions' exposure and experience which schools such as MCKK, SAS, STF, SDAR have in abundance. As always, only the top 5 teams will qualify for the Grand Final and they are:
Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK)
Sekolah Sri Putri (SSP) Tunku Kursiah College (TKC) Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SAS) Sek. Men. Sains Sultan Azlan Shah (SERATAS) Should you noticed, the line up is almost similar to the one last year with a slight substitution, TKC appearing and not SDAR. My, it really is becoming a “soccer thing". Definately, last year's 2nd Runners-Up position was NO LUCK!! MCKK is really becoming the next Power House and surely the team to beat in this upcoming Grand Final.
For your information, here are the details of the Grand Final:
21st June 2008 Putrajaya International Convention Center, PICC Congratulations to the lads, who have performed their very best and again securing the ticket to play in the Final. It’s a great achievement surely. Congratulation also to Mr Rosman for his second successive Grand Final and let’s hope he will stay and continue to guide MCKK Wind Orchestra Team for more glories. This is surely a history in the making. written by Adib 0004.
